To get your own World-Wide Web (WWW) home page on VM/CMS, you must:
If you just want to experiment with the VM/CMS WWW server, and don't have a specific purpose in mind, use 450 kilobytes as your estimate. This is the smallest increment of VM/CMS disk space that you can get.
If you have a specific purpose in mind, you may wish to estimate the amount of disk space you need more accurately. To do this, first write a list of the items you wish to make WWW-accessible. If these items already exist as disk files, also write their sizes. For items that don't yet exist as disk files, use the following typical sizes:
Small human-readable text items: 1 kilobyte
Medium human-readable text items: 25 kilobytes
Large human-readable text items: 100 kilobytes
Small multimedia items: 50 kilobytes
Medium multimedia items: 250 kilobytes
Large multimedia items: 1 megabyte
Add the total number of kilobytes for all items you want to store and use this as your disk space estimate. If you estimate wrong, it's OK; once your WWW minidisk has been created, UTCC can increase or reduce its size.
Once you've estimated how much disk space you'll need, then send E-mail to the Computing Help Desk, at "HELPDESK@UTKVM1.UTK.EDU". Include:
The Help Desk staff will forward your request and the WWW minidisk will be added within a few working days.
Remember the additional disk space will increase your monthly VM/CMS usage charge. Each disk space increment of 450 kilobytes will increase your monthly VM/CMS usage charge about 60 cents.
After your WWW minidisk has been added to your VM/CMS userid, log on to your VM/CMS userid and enter the command:
MAKE_WWWHOME
This command:
After running the MAKE_WWWHOME command, use the FILELIST command to see what's are on your WWW minidisk. Then use XEDIT to look at each file. Be absolutely sure not to change and save UTLOGO.GIF, else you may damage it. If you damage it, it may be unviewable.
VM/CMS stores your WWW-accessible items in disk files. Copy each item to your WWW minidisk. This puts the items in a place where the VM/CMS WWW server can find them.
You'll find a VM/CMS disk file called WEBSHARE FILELIST on your WWW minidisk. Edit it. For each WWW item, enter its VM/CMS disk file name and file type on a separate line. This tells the VM/CMS WWW server it's OK to make these items WWW-accessible.
Finally, you should put hypertext references to your WWW-accessible items on your WWW home page. The WWW server does not require this, but it helps WWW users find your WWW-accessible items.
